Character study in the movie The Ponder Heart
1 English 102-003 September, 29 2003 The Ponder Heart In her movie "The Ponder Heart", Director Martha Coolidge characterizes diverse personality. The story takes place in Clay County, Mississippi and tells the story about the Ponder family. This pleasant movie, funny in someways may relate to people in real life and even, sometimes, to people that we might meet in everyday life. At the beginning of the movie, a voice over, more precisely Edna Ponder, interpreted by JoBeth Williams, makes a brief description about the characters of the story. It can be thought that she is the protagonist of the movie but, actually she stays more focused on her uncle Daniel Ponder than any other members of the family. In describing her uncle Daniel, she makes the point that he has only one weakness which is for being too generous in giving away his possession. The protagonist Uncle Daniel Ponder interpreted by Peter MacNicol may be considered as a dynamic character. Indeed, during the movie, he is confronted by all sorts of events like his marriage to an unexpected woman named Bonnie Dee Peacock, interpreted by Angela Bettis, the death of his father Sam "Grandpa" Ponder, interpreted by Boyce Holleman which was the same day of his wedding, and finally the death of his wife in which he is accused of her murder and judged in court.
