The article is an editorial in a Jakarta publication that offers opinions on the current state of language education in Indonesia. The author believes that as global competition is heating up, language skills are becoming increasingly important. In Indonesia, these skills are being overlooked due to outdated methods of teaching, and a lack of awareness that language is a critical thinking tool. The author makes his/her point by presenting contrasting viewpoints, explanations, and rational arguments on why improvements are needed. Perception The author establishes his/her perceptions on the current state of language education by quoting a high level authority, the Minister of National Education. The Minister appears not to place much value on the teaching of language skills; based on comments made “blatantly… on several occasions” that Indonesian is “a boring school subject.” The author then proposes that “many” believe language education should be overhauled. The perception given to the reader is that language education is a national problem. Assumption The author bases his/her arguments on a few assumptions, namely 1) teachers and administrators at all levels may not be fully aware of the value of language education; 2) students are lacking in language skills and communication skills and 3) literacy skills are important thinking tools, especially in a global environment.
