Introduction to Drug Abuse Drug abuse has turned to be a world’s major health concern and has reached epidemic proportions throughout society. Consequently, a drug could be defined as any substance other than food which by its chemical or physical nature alters the structure or functions in the living organism. Humankind’s has checkered and often ambivalent relationship with psychoactive plants and drugs. During the early years of history, the role of the opium poppy in ancient Mesopotamia and the ergot-based mystery cult of Eleusis, through the opium wars in China and the persecution of medieval herbalist witches, up to the 'psychedelic rebellion' of the sixties and the insanities of the current 'war on drugs,' it is very surprising that drugs abuse has come a long way throughout time in history. When drug abuse is discussed, one often fails to mention the vast contributions of medical research which resulted in the vast discovery of various drugs and antibiotics to eliminate the various feared diseases. However, with the discovery of more drugs that are stronger and better, it has also contributed to the growing proportions of drug abuses around the world, especially towards society mainly teenagers. Drug abuse presents the current world problem and that it presents a real danger to both the national security and economic stability of many developed and developing nations such as Malaysia, Singapore, United States of America and many more. Stated differently, the belief that drugs can be used as a means of problem solving and as a life organizing factor can often lead to abuse. Apart from that, family members that are abused with drugs would commonly lead to a life with no others, commonly left out or stranded away from family members due to their actions. Mainly, this research would entitle readers to further knowledge on the drug cycle, from its causes and its impact on individuals, families and society, and to the solutions to tackle this problem that has seen its growing days. Specifically, the causes of drug abuse, which is the first phase of the common drug cycle, would be focused more towards why people abuse the use of drugs and why is it a major problem towards community and the world. The second phase would be the impact it has towards the society, focusing more towards the two different kinds of impacts and how it brings down the morality of people who do and do not take drugs. The third phase of the common drug cycle is the effects of drugs on the human body and the types of drugs commonly used by drug abusers. This would be on detailed about the various kinds of drugs there are on the drug market and the different effects of each drug has towards the human body. The last phase of the cycle would be the focus on how to bring about a solution to this dynamic problem and how government, private sectors and community plays a role in upholding drug abusers and showing them the right path once again. The preliminary research of the topic would mainly be describing the depreciation and depuration of drugs on individuals, families and society. Answering questions such as how do we stop it, how does this occur, why do they occur, when will they stop and so on. The topic would be focusing more towards how people depreciate the use of drugs and how the depuration of drugs turns into a global health problem, also towards individuals, families and society as a whole. The Causes of Drug Abuse The elementary of drug abuse rest aside in most theories or beliefs that addiction centers on the seeking of pleasure or the fear of avoidance of withdrawal. One of the most common reasons of the uses of drugs or addiction is the euphoric or pleasure seeking view as drugs provide the means of escaping from some of the difficulties of life such as depression, anxiety, frustration and many more. However, there is no single cause of drug addiction as the prevalence of drug addiction is determined by the availability, the accessibility of the drug and the susceptibility of individuals to addiction or misuse. Before a cure for drug abuse can be affected or taken place, one must first correct the injustice in a given society as drug abuse has turned to be one of society’s major problems. The sociological theory of anomie (Cloward & Ohlin, 1960) clearly reflects that every society has certain desired goals which have been cultured among its citizens and that it has been developed into a legitimate method or avenues. As a result of social barriers in most communities throughout the world, the disadvantaged segment of a society becomes frustrated and will often resort to legitimate or illegitimate ways of escape from obtaining certain goals in life. Another highly held belief of drug abuse involves the avoidance or the fear of withdrawal. Addiction could be defined scientifically as a learning process resulting in a person assuming a different identity as the addict tries to maintain their defiant life style so as to avoid the consequences of withdrawal. Most addicts takes in mind the thrive of fun and adventure of what drugs do to them and how they could accept any possibilities of life and avoid withdrawal to a certain extend. Lastly, in sociological viewpoint there are suggestions that drug addiction could be referred to as a disease and that there is no cure since some misfortunate people are born with the tendency to become an addict. Therefore, any treatment strategies should be emphasized more towards a drug free day and accepting the possibilities of deterioration.
