Amongst a Theologian: John Cobb The theologian John Cobb, who visited us on October 11, 2002, helped elaborate the topics we have discussed in class thus far. Professionalism, inter religious dialogue, and forming a common ground were amongst the issues talked about. There are two ways to approach the issue of professionalism when applied to theology. The old school thought about a theologian states that only a professional has the true ability to discuss the meanings behind theology. Everyone had a professional career that dealt with a specific topic. That way when people would congregate the professional of one topic would speak about it and then move on to the next professional to discuss his own as well. Professionals in academic theology kept everything within boundaries. This causes an academic theology in which it doesn’t really help people in faith and church.
