The Essenes first arose around 150 B.C. They started their own religion because they felt they had been entrusted with a mission. These people were later known as the founders of Christianity. They chose to be extremely different the other people in that time. They were very legalistic about everything. The obeyed the Sabbath to the point where they were not allowed to answer the call of nature on the holy day. They did not make blood sacrifices in fear of pollution.
