"Almost a Man"
Regarding "Almost a Man" in the final paragraph I believe what the author was trying to show that the boy thinks that he is now a man since he has the gun. Dave thinks that the gun is equivalent to his manhood and this is not true, but since he see all the men in the fields carrying and shooting guns he feels this will give him a man status. Dave has this crazy idea that if he had a gun he will be a man and with this gun he would be able to impress other men and friends with his shooting skills and the cleanness of his gun. Dave not once thought that he is naturally born a man and secondly that his father mentor and molder is a mna , husband and father; does not carry a gun. Dave is protrayed in this story as a confused young man that wants to be view as a man and he is frustrated that everyone that comes in contact with his idea of owing a gun remarks "But your nothing but a boy". Dave wants to gain respect and status form the elders and his friends and family. In my opinion Dave had that perfect opportunity to show manhood when he shot the mule he could had stood up for his mistake like a man and claim responsibility for making a mistake he instead lies and then run away from his debt. He hid and buries the gun only to unbury the gun later that night and started shooting like he had no common sense, then he ran off like a thief in the night no I'm sorry like a child with a new toy to jump the train all the while is man is accompanied with if he still held the gun or not.
