EDNA ST. VINCENT MILLAY: TIME HAS NO EFFECT ON HEALING A poet has a sincere way of describing grief. Creative endeavors following a loss can be very therapeutic and helps the grieving person to find a means of expressing grief or remembering someone lost. It is through this expression of emotion and that grief can be understood and others can find not only comfort, but relate to the poet’s words. The expression of a catastrophe is a way for the poet to heal through loss and help them discover what is causing certain emotions. Throughout life everyone experiences a loss, whether it is the death of a loved one or the ending of a relationship. In Edna St. Vincent Millay’s “Sonnet II” we see the ability of a poet to find the beauty of nature in tragedy. The main purpose of the poem is to convey that time does not have a positive effect of getting over a casualty while adding a modern form to the traditional Italian sonnet. Millay was one of the few female poets during the rapid social change of the 20th century. Through poetry that was transgressive and traditional, Millay provided symbolic access to modernity for her audience. She made it possible for her audience to relate to her words by using the symbols of her time period so that her sonnets would stand apart from poems of the past. Many women who were writing in the late teens and twenties of the 1900s had to negotiate the cultural paradigm of the New Woman, but Edna St. Vincent Millay was able to become that image. With “Sonnet II” Millay was able to change the traditional sonnet, which led many critics to state that the defiant Millay did not understand how to write. She portrayed herself as a female poet with the ability to blend contemporary issues and feelings together into the traditional sonnet. Sonnet II uses the common form, known as the Italian sonnet.
