How does ‘Three Kings’ construct the relationship between ‘us’ (the United States) and ‘them’ (Iraq)?
It could be argued that Three Kings is an examination of the failures of the first Gulf War (19-19) as it views US military intervention through Iraqi eyes, stressing the profound sense of betrayal felt by anti-Saddam dissident groups and the Iraqi resentment of perceived American interests. The opening line of the movie, "Are we shooting people or what?" captures the confusion and naivety of its protagonists as they entangle themselves in the multifaceted issues surrounding the Iraqis and what they perceive as American perfidy and pirating of Kuwaiti oil during the first Gulf War. The purpose of the first Gulf War was ostensibly to stabilise a war-torn Middle East and to liberate the Iraqi people by outing Sadddam and introducing a regime change, this however inevitably raises the question of what that would be changed to, and whether true reform is possible under current occupation strategies.
