After the civil war, our country was headed toward a new era and it all started with the idea of Reconstruction. Though this was supposed to ensure a better country and provide equal rights for freedmen it did nothing of the kind. With many for this new change, still some were still not in favor for giving African Americans equal rights. As started in Document 1 Congressman Boyer still believed that the Negroes shouldn’t be given any equal rights.
