Silverchair is Australia’s most successful contemporary rock band. The groups has had more top 20 hits during the last five years than any other artist and have sold over six million albums across the world. Daniel Johns, Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou were all born in 1979 in the beach suburb of Merewether in Newcastle. Johns and Gillies started making music together in primary school and Joannou later joined the pair on bass. In the groups early days they were called the Innocent Criminals and played mainly Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. The Innocent Criminals played shows all around the Hunter Valley region until they got their big break in 1994 when they won a national demo comp called “Pick Me” which was hosted by SBS TV and Triple J radio.
