POSITIVE IMPACT OF TAYLORISM IN ORGANISATION AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO MODERN MANAGEMENT IN NIGERIA. INTRODUCTION The Industrial Revolution of factories in the nineteenth century which gave rise to factories, new plant and machinery and plentiful of labor had the setback on organizing all these elements into an efficient and profitable operations. It was at this point that F.W Taylor conceptualized and developed his ideas of working methods thus giving rise to scientific management. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF TAYLORISM In his attempt to overrule what he called the “rule of thumb”-the practice at the organization level whereby management leave working methods to the initiative of the workers’’1,he devised a systematic approach to measuring the efficiency of workers. His basic principles were; ‘Time studies, Functional or specialized supervision, Standardization of tools and implements, Standardization of work methods, Separate planning function, Management by exception principle, the use of ‘slide-rules and time-saving devices, instruction cards for workmen, task allocation and large bonus for successful performance. It also includes the scientific selection of the workman, scientific education and development of the workman and friendly cooperation between the management and the workmen”2. Division of labor, which originated from Taylor’s concept gives room for an employee to be specialized in an aspect, acquire more knowledge on that aspect and thus producing the best result though some scholars have faulted it to being redundant.
