The program that I have located that is also used in Virginia for restorative justice purposes is Criminon. The Criminon program was established in New Zealand in 1972. It was made for the purpose of criminal rehabilitation and the prevention of criminality by educating persons and restoring self-respect values so that they can be contributing members to society. There are three types of Criminon programs. First is the correspondence course method which delivers the courses to inmates in prisons throughout the world. Trained Criminon volunteers supervise each lesson of each course on a weekly basis by mail. Second is the on-site program, which delivers the courses to offenders in prisons and juvenile detention centers in person, with volunteers directly supervising lessons. Third is the Criminon Community Education Center, which delivers the courses to people from community-based programs, probation and parole departments, court referrals, schools and community organizations.
