Relationships and How it Effects People Lives In the “Scholarship Jacket” and “What Do Fish Have to Do with Anything” the characters learn important lessons from their relationships. In the “Scholarship Jacket,” Marta learns important lessons from her Grandpa, and in “What Do Fish Have to Do with Anything,” Willie learns important lessons from a homeless beggar. These two kids had learned very important lessons from the people they least expected. In the “Scholarship Jacket” by Marta Salinas, Marta learns important lessons from her Grandpa. One lesson Grand told her was “Then if you pay for ti, Marta, it is not a scholarship jacket, is it...? Marta was very angry at Grandpa but she knew he was right. Marta learned that the scholarship jacket was to be earned not purchased. Grandpa tells Marta that he will not pay fifteen dollars for the scholarship jacket. Marta learned that living with someone who is poor and smart, but loves her and knows what’s best for her is so much better than living with someone who is wealthy, but does no love her and does not care about her.
