Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston. His mother was Elizabeth Arnold Poe. She died in Richmond on December 8, 1811. Edgar was taken into the family of John Allan, a member of the firm of Ellis and All, tobacco-merchants. Poe registered at the University of Virginia on February 14, 1826.
