Defense of War on Terror
Winston Churchill once said “There is no merit in putting off a war for a year if, when it comes, it is a far worse war or one much harder to win.”(1) The remnants of the Persian Gulf War in 1991 plus Iraq’s failure to abide by U.N. resolutions has led the United States to action in a coalition with about 40 other nations. But did the United States have the right, moral or not, to go in against the U.N.’s wishes and invade Iraq? “Now this I’m not pro-war, I’m just anti-Saddam”.(2) The United States has had many scuffles with Saddam Hussein and their mediation through the U.N. has failed miserably because the U.N. is a faulty organization and the United States repeated attempts to fix this have not worked. This validates any action that has been or will be taken in Iraq. U.N. Resolution 1441 states “Recalling that its resolution 678 (1990) authorized Member States to use all necessary means to uphold and implement its resolution 660 (1990) of 2 August 1990 and all relevant resolutions subsequent to resolution 660 (1990) and to restore international peace and security in the area,”.(3) Therefore the United States as a U.N. representative has the responsibility to stop Iraq from building weapons of mass destruction. To understand the current situation in Iraq you need a brief history of the ruthlessness of Saddam Hussein and the Baathist regime. Saddam Hussein was vice president of Iraq from 1968 to 1979 when he became their dictator. He stops at nothing for his personal power and regime survival. He is responsible for the disappearances and executions of high-ranking government officials who were his possible rivals. He was responsible for the torture and systematic execution of political prisoners. He has ordered “prison cleansings” where prisoners are pulled out of their cells, lined up, and shot. He ordered the use of chemical weapons against Iranian forces in the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war, and against Iraq's Kurdish population in 1988. The 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war left 150,000 to 340,000 Iraqis and 450,000 to 730,000 Iranians dead. He ordered the invasion and destruction of Kuwait, which killed thousands of Kuwaitis. He is also responsible for killing 30,000 to 60,000 Shi’a Muslims who revolted and took over south Iraq in 1991 then were later killed or captured then tortured. He even tortured members of the Iraqi soccer team for losing games. This man is obviously violating basic human rights and U.N. resolutions. The famous words of the United States Constitution are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The Iraqi people have been stripped of these rights that are not just in the Constitution but these are God given rights. Nobody anywhere should be deprived of these rights. Past “elections” have shown Saddam Hussein has won 100% of the votes. Obviously these votes are rigged and any opposition of Saddam mysteriously disappears in the middle of the night. In some of Uday Hussein’s belongings there was a letter saying his father wanted to expand Iraq starting with the easiest, Kuwait and then moving on to Palestine and Arabstan (now part of Iran). Saddam Hussein’s past with chemical weapons on his own people have set forth many resolutions to stop him. He poses an imminent threat to the United States and his neighbors. Now as the U.S. began to plan the war in Iraq you must ask yourself two questions: 1. Is Saddam Hussein a terrorist? and 2. Does he pose a threat to if not the United States, at least world peace? From his history you can see Saddam Hussein is nothing but a terrorist. He suppresses his own people and systematically murders them with weapons of mass destruction. On Tuesday September 11, 2001 the United States saw just the beginning of all the future possibilities of war on the American people. His link to terrorism worldwide is known showing that he is an obvious threat to the world if not the United States. Therefore the United States must confront Saddam Hussein and say “you either stop it right now or we are coming in and we mean business”. September 11th will look miniscule to the threat Iraq poses to the United States and the world once they acquire a nuclear device. “9-11, the war started here,” said pro-war labor union members that convened Washington D.C.
