In most fairy tales you expect an prince to save an beautiful princesses from an fire breathing dragon. The writers didn’t want to be like an normal fairy tale, it is all the opposite. When a director is making a film it is important that he/she uses a variety of camera angles to create certain effects. Like at the beginning of the film, Shrek scares the fairy tale characters away, there is a close up shot of Shrek's Mouth to give the impression that he is going to eat them.
