The oxford dictionary describes crime as a serious offence one for which there is a punishment by law. It also states that persons who commit crimes are labeled criminals. Studies show that persons who use drugs , consume alcohol frequently or in large amounts or live in poverty stricken communities are most likely to commit criminal offences. Isn’t it amazing that we are only in the seventh month of the year 2003 and the murder count so far for the year stands at twenty eight. This averages out to a murder once a week. Reasons why crime in our society is increasing include the increase in drug trafficking, the increase in the number of unemployed citizens and the fact that guns are more accessible. The first reason why crime in our society is increasing is because of the increase in drug trafficing. On Tuesday, April 10th 2001 Drug Enforcement Unit Officers assisted by DEA agents pursued a go-fast boat from Miami to Grand Bahama. The boat with four male occupants was stopped and a search revealed eight hundred thirty eight pounds of cocaine. The same was seized along with the 42ft go-fast boat and three 250 HP engines. The four accused persons were arrested and charged. Due to the proximity of The Bahamas to the United States(USA) it has become a stop and rest point for drug traffickers trying to smuggle drugs into the USA.
