Obsession, Revenge, and Sadism In today’s society where murder and corruption are commonplace, many people do not think about obsession, sadism and revenge. These things lead up to a total corruption of morals and the destruction of innocent people. In 1847, when Wuthering Heights, was published people regarded it as “...excessively morbid, violent, and indelicate.” ( Bloom’s Notes pg. 9). Heathcliff’s obsession with Catherine Earnshaw began at a very early age. Heathcliff was introduced to Catherine and Hindley Earnshaw, as their new brother. “...one of Nelly Dean’s last reflections is, “Is he a ghoul or a vampire?”.”(Modern Critical Interpretations pg.10). Catherine and Heathcliff became fast friends much to the dismay of her older brother Hindley. Not long after Heathcliff was brought to live at Wuthering Heights, Mr. Earnshaw became ill and died. Heathcliff had lost the only father he knew and this drew him closer to Catherine. They were virtually inseparable. After Mr. Earnshaw’s death, Hindley returned home with a wife. He did not like the fact that Heathcliff seemed to have Humphries 2 an obsession with Catherine. He treated him as a slave and told Catherine she was not to associate with him. Catherine’s disobedience and continuation of their friendship only helped to reinforce Heathcliff’s obsession. As Heathcliff and Catherine became older, he began to believe that they were soul mates and were meant to be together.
