Jana Voogt Soc 280 Entry #4 Prof. McCrea November 19, 2001 Jones, Richard. “A Christians Duty to end the War on Drugs.” Christians for Cannabis. 9 Sept. 2001. http://www.christiansforcannabis.com/article1010.html Summary: This Article covers some of the most relevant drug policy issues of our time, and to my surprise it does so in a different way than most Christians would agree with. The author of the article Richard Jones seems to have a very liberal view on the war on drugs and on the way drug policy should be. He is adamantly against the policies that he feels we base on “fear and hysteria” of drugs. He asks Christians to be influential in policy making so that we can fight the war on drugs with rational drug policies based on science and compassion rather than hysteria and punishment. To begin Jones addresses whether or not government should even be involved in legislation of drugs since it seems rather ridiculous because no one can agree on what is moral and what is not. Secondly Jones points out that the War on Drugs in our country has turned into a war on the people who use drugs. He points out that the government has given the black market complete control over the illegal drugs that pervade our nation, which has left us less effective in combating the effect of those drugs on our people. Jones ends with the avocation of a government that legalizes drugs with government regulation and providing programs to give treatment to those who realize they have a drug abuse problem as well as truthful education programs to keep kids off drugs. Analysis: I would have to say I found Jones Christian stance on these issues quite surprising in my conservative understanding of Christians.
