Hello and good morning. How many of you like to start your day off with drugs?!?! Well, I know I sure do! In the morning there is nothing better than to brew some coffee to pep you up. Yes, that’s right; the caffeine in coffee is a drug. In fact, it is the world’s most popular drug! According to CNN quick facts, over 90% of the American population consumes caffeine every single day. I am here to talk about what caffeine is, where it originated from, and how caffeine can affect you as an individual. Caffeine, as stated in the Merriam-Webster dictionary, is defined as a stimulant that is commonly found in coffee, tea, and cola. This chemical acts as a stimulant to the central nervous system. Now, here is a little background on how caffeine came to be. A fact about Caffeine on http://www.xs4all.nl/~4david/caffeine.html says that the white, bitter-tasting, crystalline substance was first isolated from coffee in 1820. Both words, caffeine and coffee, are derived from the Arabic word “qahweh” pronounced “kahveh” in Turkish. The origins of the words reflect the spread of the beverage into Europe via Arabia and Turkey from north-east Africa, where coffee trees were cultivated in the 6th century.
