The novels written in or about the pre or post civil war era all show similar struggles the people of that time endure. The Adventures Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain show the struggles of a young boy to overcome the questionable beliefs of that time about slaves and there freedom. In O Pioneers! by Wila Cather a young woman, named Alexandra, is forced to question the usual way of life for farm families of that time living in Nebraska. Although Huckleberry Finn and Alexandra are examples of the independent American spirit during the 1800’s, they are very different in what they dream for and how they do about realizing their dreams. In both novels, self-reliance is displayed by young boys or girls. In O Pioneers!, Alexandria’s father died when she was in her early teens. She being the oldest and in her fathers opinion the wisest was left to run the farm. This was as much responsibility as a grown man has. Alexandria being the strong woman that she is took on this challenge and the farm became very prosperous which was an uncommon thing to happen in that time on the farms. In Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Huck’s mother died when he was young and his alcoholic father a banded him at a young age.
