Earthquakes are a common problem in California, there are thousands of earthquakes a year but very few are actually felt. But when that big one does come we should be prepared to handle it properly so everyone can be as safe as possible when one of these disasters hits. I have experienced many earthquakes during my lifetime and I was fortunate to not have been in one big enough to hurt me. I believe earthquakes are commonly overlooked because they do not hit very often and most of the time they are too small to cause significant damage. Even though they are rare, I believe we should be prepared to deal with them and we should take the proper precautions to prevent damage to property and human life. I believe my house is very well prepared for earthquakes, when my parents build it they took measures to protect the house from damage in the event of an earthquake. Things like securing the house to the foundation, having steel reinforcements, and having three retaining walls. Our house is also very resistant to fires, we made sure to do this because our house burned down in a fire ten years ago. Most of our things are secure so they will not topple over and we have an emergency stash of water, food and lights. I think my household is very well equipped for a large magnitude earthquake and my family is well prepared to deal with an emergency situation such as this one. Research I recently interviewed a Captain Campbell of a local fire station and asked him some questions on earthquake preparedness. He told me that if a large magnitude earthquake hit the majority of homes would be unprepared to deal with the damage caused by it. He added that if a very large earthquake actually struck it could damage communications and roadways, therefore making it difficult or impossible for the firefighters to come and help people. So in effect, people should be prepared to take care of themselves during and after an earthquake. He gave me some general tips on earthquake safety that could help a family be better prepared for an earthquake. First, he told me to choose a safe place in every room, such as under a sturdy table or desk or against an inside wall where nothing can fall on you.
