Little is known about the first African American hero of the New World. He is believed to have been born into slavery around the year 1723. Attucks has been described as a huge man “whose looks was (sic) enough to On the evening of March 5, the outside of the Customs House was being guarded by a lone sentry, Private Hugh White. A group of disgruntled citizens, led by Crispus Attucks, gathered outside of the Customs House. The citizens were up to their usual sport of tormenting the British soldiers who were stationed in the city. The British soldiers were stationed there to keep peace, but the townspeople resented the English army being in their city. Fights between the two sides were common. The British soldier standing outside the Customs House was their next target. The massacre began when a young apprentice yelled an insult at Private White. The private struck the apprentice on the ear with the butt of his rifle. The boy yelled for help and more people joined the crowd. At a nearby cwhen there was a fire in the city. This drove more people into the streets. The British sentry was now confronted with an angry mob. He stood his grouswelled to over 400 people.
