ODBC,OLE, and ADO
The purpose of this paper is to answer the question, “What is the relationship among Open Database Connectivity (ODBC), Object Linking and Embedding (OLE), and Active Data Objects (ADO)?” In order to answer this question, we must first explain what they are. ODBC, OLE DB, and ADO are all interfaces used for accessing database servers. ODBC, OLE DB, and ADO are the main components of Microsoft's Universal Data Access (UDA) specification, which is designed to provide a consistent way of accessing data regardless of how the data are structured. They were created to allow data processing independent of the Database Management System (DBMS). ODBC, OLE, and ADO are the progressive steps that programmers have taken towards in the history of data processing. Open Database Connectivity was the first interface to be developed.
