Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” Being an American realist novelist in the 1800s wasn’t appreciated at all and that’s just what Kate Chopin was. She was a modernist who wrote about the American life and exactly how it was lived. She was the type of person who, if she had a strong feeling about something, then she would act upon it. (“Kate Chopin”) Not very many people were brave enough to do that. “The Story of an Hour” is about this lady, Mrs. Mallard, finding out about her husband’s death. She has a heart condition and must be told about his death in a way that wouldn’t upset her. Once she finds out, she gets very upset and starts to mourn his death. She wants to be alone and goes to a private room. Once there, she suddenly feels a sense of freedom because now she has the chance to do things she’s always wanted to do (Chopin 111-113). After being in her room by herself for such a long time, her sister got worried that she might make herself sick, so her sister went to get her. Her sister and her went downstairs, and as they reached the bottom of the stairs, the door opened. To Mrs. Mallard’s surprise, it is her “dead” husband. He was still alive, and it had been a mistake that he was thought to be dead.
