Glazounov concerto in Eb major
Glazounov’s Saxophone Concerto in Eb Major is based on the initial four measure theme played by the string orchestra. The theme can be divided in to four motives (See insert). This single theme is used sequentially and in different transpositions to create the entire rest of the piece, including the harmonies and melody. The melody of the saxophone begins in measure 11. The theme is initially stated in bars 11 to 15, and then builds the remainder of the piece solely off of this theme. Bars 27 to 29 are a sequence of motive a followed by motive d. This exact phrase is then repeated, transposed up a major third. A diminished sequence of motive b is used in measures 93 to 103, before the accelerando. Measure 169 begins an 18 bar unaccompanied saxophone passage. Measures 169 to 176 are a sequence of motive a, while measures 177 to 185 use a sequence of motive c, with a restatement of motive a in the last two measures 186 and 187.
