Our perception of what is being said when someone is trying to communicate something to us is greatly influenced by several factors. And, to make matters even more complicated, these factors normally have nothing to do with the intended meaning of the message. Theory teaches that only about 20 to 30 percent of spoken communication is understood by the receiver. Now imagine you have to relay a piece of very important information. This lack of understanding, so to speak, is a direct consequence of the so called perception flaws which are the factors that cause problems in our understanding of what is being conveyed to us. The film My Cousin Vinny is a situational comedy, and is full of very good examples of how such perception flaws can completely alter the reality of practically any situation. Basically it is a story of two college students on a road trip across the United States who find themselves in a wrong place at the wrong time. Passing through a small town in Alabama they stop in a convenience store and by accident forget to pay for a can of tuna. Right after they leave the store a robbery occurs and the clerk is shot. Since they fit the description of the robbers, and also drive a similar car they get picked up by the police and charged with the murder of the clerk. During the interrogation is when the first example of a perception flaw in the movie becomes apparent. Since they believe that they have been arrested for shoplifting the can of tuna they gladly admit to everything before anyone even mentions to them why exactly they were arrested. One of the funniest scenes in the movie is when the police officer finally asks whether it was before or after they stole the tuna that they shot the clerk. At this moment one of them exclaims “I shot the clerk?!” in the form of a question, but is interpreted as having made a statement of fact, or, in other words, admitted to the crime.
