malrotation
Malrotation ☻Pathophysiology: Malrotation- “the term malrotation may refer to any anomaly of midget rotation. Anomalies of mixed rotation or of incomplete rotation.” (Wylie, 1999, p. 750) “The small intestine lacks a normal posterior fixation in malrotation because it has only a rudimentary attachment near the origin of the superior mesenteric artery. Therefore the entire mass can twist when the mobile loops of intestine from the doudenojejunal junction to the middle of the transverse colon twist on themselves.” (Huether, 2000, p.990) The twisting, which is also called volvulus, can cause obstruction of the superior mesenteric artery, leading to infarction and possibly necrosis of the gut.
