Participating in a council gives purpose to a resident’s life. Belonging to the group gives residents a sense of identity and helps build self-esteem. Pride increases when something in which the residents have participated in accomplished. Feeling useful is important for all people, regardless of age or disability. Effective resident councils help individuals speak out about what’s bothering them, so that the negative emotion of anger and worry are not turned inward to make them physically ill. The fear of retaliation is often present in a nursing and boarding care home. Whenever people are dependent on others for their needs, there is the fear that they may make others so angry that care will be withheld.
