Why do some Christians oppose abortion?
Introduction: First of all the term abortion means the termination (to end) of a pregnancy before birth either by natural or artificial means. An abortion is the premature expulsion from the body of an embryo or foetus. Abortion is quite common in this country because an abortion is free and an easy procedure. Some women use abortion as a form of conception because you have to pay for the condom or morning after pill. In the 1960’s abortion was illegal because of some women who were using abortion as a form of conception and the Pope didn’t believe this was right. But of course this backed fired because women didn’t want to disgrace themselves or their families by having an unwanted baby so they would get a back-street abortion. A back-street abortion is when a woman is made to put a frozen packet of peas on their stomach to numb it. And then with a sharp abject i.e. a knitting needle it would be implanted inside the women and used to break the side of the womb. Of course this proved problems as most women would get infections or have internal bleeding, lots of women died from this. This is why in 1967 abortion was legalised as for it is better to save one life (the mother) than to lose two (the mother and the baby). The two sides, which have been argued, are of course pro-life vs. pro-choice. Pro-life means the people are totally for the life of the baby, and pro-choice means they are totally for the women’s right to choose. Also these two sides are split into absolute and moderate e.g. absolute pro-life are definitely for the baby while moderate pro-life means that the baby has a right to life most of the time except in certain circumstances. Also moderate pro-choice means that women have the right to choose in most but not all cases, there are limitations.
