Fear can arise from bad experiences from the past and target certain individuals. 1. Many people’s fears can be traced back to something like an incident at school where they were teased, or extremely embarrassed. As a result of this the brain can link the negative feelings associated with that experience to other similar experiences (The Phobia Clinic, pg 2). 2. Fear directly affects women, shy people, and people with low self-confidence. Phobias start developing after puberty and peak in late teens. B. There are two different types of phobias. 1. There are Simple Phobias which are fears of specific objects or situations. Some examples are flying, Snakes, and closed spaces. 2. There is also Social Phobias which are fears of situations in which the individual can be watched by others. A good example of this is public speaking. C. Some symptoms of Social Phobias include: 1. Worrying for days or weeks before you have to meet new people. 2. Blushing, sweating a lot, trembling, nausea, or feeling like you have to throw up before or during an event where you are with new people. Even drinking alcohol to make your fears go away is a symptom of a fear of Public speaking. Transition: “Most of these symptoms appear to be unattractive accept for maybe the drinking part, but there is a way to cure and steadily help your fear.” II.
