Violence and Music There is no question that the things that we are exposed to have some effect on us, one way or another. It is, however, absurd to blame a type or genre of music for the actions that people make. Not only is it absurd but it is also very easy. If someone commits a violent crime and was known to listen to violent music, then of corse that is what makes them violent, right? The music would be the easiest one to blame for the person's actions, above anything else. If you want to look at young kids who go out and commit violent crimes, best to look at the home life and parental figures that are present in their environment. Not the songs they listen to. This can easily be related to the saying "guns don't kill people, people kill people." Or you can say "violent music doesn't make people commit violent acts, violent people commit violent acts." It is a proven fact that there is no greater influence on a child or young adult, than that of parental influence, whether it is positive or negative. We have seen this debate many times in the past, significantly earlier than rap music. Judas Priest and Ozzy Osbourne among others have been blamed for causing the death of young adults through their music. The only thing that I can say is if a person goes out and kills someone else supposedly because of the music they listen to have much greater emotional problems than that of which type of music they choose to listen to. Something else I find absurd is how ignorant these parents assume children and teens are. If a person hears a violent thing on the radio, I don't see how they would be urged to go out and commit a random violent act, only based on that.
