On February 2, 1999, Jesus Rios, Gregory McConnell, Justine Certeza, and five other named individuals filed a class action suit against the University of California Regents and the University of California (UC) at Berkeley. Jesus Rios, a Latino, is the son of farm workers. For as long as he can remember, Jesus worked beside his parents picking apples and apricots and digging ditches from sunup to sundown. Despite the travails of migrant life, Jesus graduated from high school in the top four percent of his class.
