4. What is the relationship between the narrative coherence and visual effects in ‘The Matrix?’ "The Matrix", written and directed by Larry and Andy Wachowski, is a cyber adventure full of visual effects supporting the narrative coherence. Without the visual effects the appearance and the redefining of the nature of reality in the film would not have been as convincing and spectacular. Visual effects are not necessary in any movie for the narrative coherence because they do not define or explain the narrative but because they are strongly linked to it and in case of ‘The Matrix’ even stronger (because it deals with a virtual world/reality using special effects to create a world of illusion) they support the narrative coherence. ‘The Matrix’ concerns a young computer programmer (feared hacker during the night) who goes by the name of Neo (Keanu Reeves) who discovers that reality as we know it is a falsehood pulled over our eyes to keep us docile and in a state of slavery for machines. As he makes this discovery, he is guided along by the rebels Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) and their leader Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne). Eventually, he is also told that he is the reincarnation of a man who could change the Matrix at will, and whom the Oracle "prophesied" would return to destroy it. Along the way, he is hindered and antagonized by Agents protecting and administering ‘the Matrix’, led by Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving). Finally he manages, after dying once, to believe in what he was told and fights Agent Smith and his fellow Agents in a final fight and destroys them.
