Independence Day 2002 Essay
It's Independence Day. 226 years ago, a group of men, believers in personal freedom, told the British Empire that their presence here was no longer welcome. They felt this way because the English rule had become oppressive. People were treated like they could not think for themselves, they were taxed beyond belief, had little or no say in their government, and, in short, were not able to exercise even the most basic God-given freedoms without a Royal Decree. Today, we need to tell the American Soviet Empire that their presence here is no longer welcome. Their rule has become oppressive. People are treated like they can not think for themselves, they are taxed beyond belief, have little or no say in their government, and, in short, are not able to exercise even the most basic God-given freedoms without an Executive Decree. In the past century, we have lost the right to own property (property taxes), to school our children as we see fit (truancy and required attendance laws), to keep our earnings for our own use (taxes, fees, fines), to speak our minds (hate crimes, hate language, 'intolerance'), to defend ourselves, our families, and our homes (anti-gun laws), to use our land as we desire (environmental impact laws, land use regulations), to enter public buildings freely (metal detectors, identification checks), to travel freely (security checks), to plan and save for our own retirements (social insecurity). Through all this, our wonderful government has told us that these things are for our own good. We are told we cannot discipline our kids because that would violate their rights. We cannot punish criminals because that would violate their rights. We cannot say the Pledge of Allegiance because that would offend foreigners and would violate their rights. We cannot require people who live here to be citizens because that would violate their rights.
