Momma was upset when she found out that I wasn’t the only black kid in my school. One of the reasons that she moved to South Jersey was to get me away from the black kids, as if I weren’t one of them. It was so bad that momma had me checking my skin color. Sometimes I even forgot that I was a black girl originally from Newark, New Jersey. But, I was thankful that there were other black kids in the school besides me. It felt good seeing other people that looked liked me. I was especially thankful for Terrell. She was smart, funny, and cool to hang with. She was into just about everything that I was into. We liked the same music, movies, and clothes. Terrell and I quickly became best friends. Momma of course wasn’t happy with that. She would always ask me, “Christina, why are you hanging with that black girl?” Of course, I would look at her like she was crazy, because once again she had me checking out my complexion. But, I just choose not to pay momma any mind. Telling myself that she was crazy seemed to be the best way to handle it. After a few years had gone by momma realized that Terrell wasn’t going anywhere, so she let it go. Terrell and I were inseparable. We did everything together. We even shared our first kiss with each other. It was junior high. I had to have been about thirteen at the time. Well Terrell and I were walking home from school, and Jonathan and Stanley ran up behind us. I wasn’t really interested in talking to them, but Terrell had a crush on Jonathan. Stanley, like me, but for some reason he just didn’t float my boat. Jonathan and Stanley were typical white boys. They reminded me of Brandon and Steve from 90210. Anyway, Terrell morphed into this creature that I was not familiar with. All of a sudden she became this giggly, goofy, fool. Everything that Jonathan said seemed to be funny, but I must have missed the joke, because I wasn’t laughing. They asked us if we wanted to go to the park with them. Terrell said yes, without a second thought. And me being a fool, followed right behind her. When we got to the park I noticed that Terrell and Jonathan were walking way ahead of Stanley and I. Jonathan even had his arm around Terrell. Stanley tried to pull that one me, but I wasn’t having it. We made it to this huge tree in the back of the park. This tree had many carvings that declared forever love. As a matter of fact, it was known as the make out tree. I guess that is because it was impossible for anyone to see what you were doing back there. Well, Jonathan must have been interested in adding Terrell’s and his name to the tree, because out of no where he shoved his tongue down her throat.
