Benedict Arnold Benedict Arnold betrayed our fledgling country. His name is now synonymous with Judas and traitor. Born January 14, 1741, Norwich, Connecticut Benedict was apprenticed at a young age to a druggist. He ran away twice during the French and Indian War. His eagerness to leave home and join the war shows in my opinion that he had a highly romanticized view of war. This may have been the reason he left his prosperous career as a trader to join the Revolution some years later. He began his career as an American Patriot in May 1775, when he and Ethan Allen led the brigade that captured Fort Ticonderoga on Lake Champlain.
