The Death of Patriotism Since the end of the 1980s interest in serving in the United States Armed Forces has been waning. Indeed, many Americans will go to great lengths to avoid meeting the gaze of a military recruiter regardless of his branch of service. There is something about the military that causes trepidation in the youth of America. In the following paragraphs we will explore the social reasons for the slump in recruiting over the last twenty years, which was attributable to a lack of focus on recruitment and changed social norms. Then we will review the changes made by the Army that has brought it roaring back to success over the past few years Recruitment success for the Armed Forces is largely dependent on the quality of its recruiting force and the current socio-political attitude toward nationalism. Americans have often proclaimed that their military is an all volunteer force, but is that true? It can be proven though, that it is not a volunteer force but rather an all recruited force. This began in 1975 with the end of the draft, which brought forth the existence of a new type of recruiter for the military branches. No longer were they the grizzled old veteran merely whiling away his or her last few years to retirement, now they were the best and brightest of their respective specialties (indeed, only the top five percent of each specialty is considered for recruiting duty) put out into the communities to represent all that was good about military service.
