When this paper was first assigned, and before I began to write my journal, I tried to think back on my past experiences to get a feel for what I would be doing. There were no major events that stood out to me as far as discrimination was concerned, but once I began keeping the journal I realized something important. Like my mother, I like to avoid conflict at all costs. This means that if someone says something to me, I usually just let it slip by to avoid the possible confrontation. However, my partner, Jamie, welcomes the confrontation. If she feels she has been discriminated against (and there is not a safety risk) she will speak up and address the problem. This usually means that I get embarrassed and try to leave. Once I started to keep the journal, though, I noticed that things happened more often that I had thought they would, whether they were in reference to my gender as a female or to my sexual orientation as a lesbian woman.
