This culture we live in today people are judged by anything from who they are, what they wear, how they talk/walk and even mislead facts. For example; if some stranger on the street told you to take this pill they held in their hand you would probably think they were crazy and walk away. Yet if a doctor held that same pill in his hand you wouldn’t even think twice about taking it. So take an issue such as the legalization of marijuana for example, the average person knows very little about this drug, however, they are always quick to judge those who are associated with this stimulant. Louis Armstrong once stated, “It really puzzles me to see marijuana connected with narcotics-dope and all that crap…it’s a thousand times better than whiskey-it’s an assistant, a friend”. Up until this point of my research I would have never agreed with that statement, until now. I believe that our society has been mislead of the positive effects marijuana can have on a person and their life, therefore marijuana should be accessible for those who wish to benefit from this “enhancer”. The use of marijuana for medical purposes has been dated as far back as 2737 B.C. when Emperor Shen-Nung in China prescribed marijuana for beriben, constipation, “female weakness”, gout, malaria, rheumatism and absentmindedness. During 2000 B.C. in Egypt marijuana was used to treat sore eyes. In 1400 B.C. marijuana and opium were used by ancient cultures through the Eastern Mediterranean for child birth pain and diseases. And in 200 A.D. Chinese physicians prescribed marijuana as an analgesic in surgical procedures. Those are just a few of the many examples of how marijuana was used medicinally thousands of years ago. Presently we still face the never-ending controversy of whether or not humans are able to benefit from marijuana. Although the contents in marijuana from 2737 B.C. are different from the marijuana teenagers are getting off the streets today, I still believe that this subject isn’t given enough credibility towards the positive aspects it can have on a person.
