When I read the book the Odyssey I wondered how Odysseus became such a hero. How would it be possible for someone to do so much in life, just for the heck of it? There has to be some reason for Odysseus’s actions, right? So I chose the question, “What motivates Odysseus in being a hero?” After fighting in the Trojan War, Odysseus’s first priority was to get home. But because he had blinded Poseidon’s son Poseidon, god of the sea, forced Odysseus to travel and wander for around ten years. All the adventures that he encountered he fought hard to get out of, just to get home to his wife. An example was when he lived with Calypso for seven years. When Calypso offered Odysseus the choice of going home to his wife and staying mortal, or remaining with her and becoming immortal, he chose to go home. “My wife is nothing compared to you for beauty, I can see that for myself. She is mortal, you are immortal and never grow old. But even so, I long for the day of my home-coming. And if some god wreaks me again I will endure it, for I have a patient mind.
