Start with a personal story about a girl I know who was addicted to cocaine. My name is Marcy Jones and today I am going to talk to you a little about the drug, cocaine. Cocaine is a strongly addictive stimulant that can have disastrous effects on a user’s body and life. Cocaine is sometimes referred to as the champagne of drugs. According to the DEA (Drug enforcement administration), about 10% of Americans have tried cocaine at least once on their lifetime. And at least 25% will become addicted to the drug. The girl I was talk about was one of those percents. Cocaine destroyed her life and almost killed her. I am talking to you today to give you some information so that maybe someone won’t have to go through what she went through. I am going to talk a little about the drug, the health risks of using it, and the other effects it can have on a person’s life. Let me go ahead and give you some basic facts about cocaine. There are many things that I want the class to know about cocaine. Cocaine comes from the leaves of the coca plant. The coca plant grows in South America, primarily Peru and Bolivia, but the organized crime groups, that control the worldwide supply, are based in Colombia. The pure cocaine is usually then transported to Mexico or other South American countries to be processed into the white powder. According to the DEA, The United States-Mexico border is the primary point where cocaine shipments are being smuggled into the US.
