From allie to allie, allies begun to dig trenches provided for protection. Soon after the battle of Marne ended in september of 1914, Germans had been forced to retreat to the River Aisne. German Commander Eric von Falkenhayn, decided that his troops must hold onto parts of france and belgium that germany had occupied. His troops were ordered to dig trenches for protection, and with allies realzing they couldn't break through this line they also began to dig trenches.
