The formula for carbohydrates is written as CH2O. This can be misleading since both the name and the formula suggest that carbohydrates are hydrated carbon. This is not so and carbohydrates have very little to do with water. Carbohydrates must be properly digested before they become useful to the body. When you eat carbohydrates your body will break them down using enzymes to form glucose molecules. It’s the glucose molecules that fuel your body giving you energy to do things, this is why carbohydrates are so important, they are the bodies main source of energy and without them we wouldn’t be able to function properly. Although your daily intake of carbohydrates should be fairly high, you must not eat to many. If your body has no use for glucose that is made from the carbohydrates it will be converted into glycogen and stored in your liver and muscle as an energy reserve. This glycogen is can be stored for about half a day but if your body has no need for all that extra energy, it will convert the glycogen into fat. Carbohydrates are measured using the glycemic index, which ranks the food from 1-100 based on its immediate effects on the blood glucose levels.
