Gabrielle Williams Spelman College English 280 – Dr. Sizemore Journal Entry #9 – Analysis of “If I Shouldn’t Be Alive” The quatrain is the most commonly used form in poetry. This four-line style was used in Emily Dickinson’s poetry at times, as well. For example, her poem, “If I shouldn’t Be Alive,” she uses quatrains throughout both stanzas. It was very difficult to assess what type of meter was used in this poem.
