Throughout many centuries, American society has changed, along with the change in society the values of the society have changed. Not every value has changed in American society but many of them have. Some vales that have changed in American society include the values of hard-work, money, family, parents, life, happiness, love, and many others. As the values have changed, many have changed for the worst, but their are some values that have changed for the better. The writer of this paper contends that the value of hard work has changed in American society. This can be seen by examining the books: The American Dream, Raisin in the Sun, and Death of a Salesman. The change in the value of hard work can been seen in the book The American Dream, when you find the young man will do any type of work easy or hard just for a little money. The quote “ Oh, almost anything . . . almost anything that pays. I’ll do almost anything for money.” (Albee 109) This quote shows that a young man in this society will do any type of work just for some money. Another quote that shows changes in values in the American society is “Unh-hunh . . . some things have changed for the better. I remember when I had my mother carted off . . . the van man who came foe her wasn’t anything as nice as this one.” What this quote is saying that the old American Dream that grandma believes in is now being lost and the new one that is replacing it is thought to be better. In addition, when Mrs. Barker is saying this she is also saying the American dream is better than the last time is changed when her mother was carted off.
