Running Head: PERIODONTAL DISEASE Periodontal Disease Treatment Options Periodontal Disease Treatment Options Periodontal disease (gum disease), affects many people and often goes untreated until advanced stages because patients are embarrassed and under informed of treatment options. Periodontal disease is a disease that affects teeth and their supporting structures. During periodontitis (which means "inflammation around the tooth”) progression, the gums pull away from the teeth and form "pockets" that are infected. This infection is caused by bacteria in plaque that spreads and grows below the gum line which can harden over time and turn into calculus (tartar). The enzymes that the human body uses to fight off infections actually start to break down bone and connective tissues that hold teeth in place. If not treated, the bones, gums, and connective tissues that support the teeth are destroyed. The teeth, of those who disregard the condition, may become loose and have to be removed and makes treatment of the disease important. This review of periodontal disease literature focuses on the non-surgical procedures of tooth scaling and root planing, open-flap and tissue regenerative surgical procedures, and dental implants. Effectiveness of Tooth Scaling and Root Planing Scaling and root planing is a "Deep Cleaning" of the teeth. It is a step above a "regular" cleaning that you might receive at your general dentist’s office and a step below a surgical procedure. It is a non-surgical technique that removes plaque and calculus below the gum line. The most utilized non-surgical method for treating the gum tissue affected by periodontal disease is tooth scaling and root planning. This course of action aims to smooth out the roots of teeth by removing tartar and other contaminates from the areas.
