Runner’s High and Life’s Motivation Have you ever felt the satisfaction from going the extra mile? In life, there are many opportunities for us to go “up and beyond the call of duty” and to go out of our way to put forth a little more effort to help someone. But what motivates us to keep working? What is the reasoning that people have when they beat themselves up trying to attain almost impossible goals? Life is like running a marathon. When you first start, you come striding out of the gates with all the energy that results from the bloom of youth. As you get older, or deeper into the race, you start to realize limitations and that you will have to pace yourself if you want to finish. If a runner ran as fast as he could throughout the entire marathon, he would never reach the finish line. He would tire out and collapse very early. However, knowing when to race and when to pace can be a deciding factor if we ever wish to accomplish our goal. Runners not only have to be physically in shape, but they have to be at the top of their game mentally as well. If a runner is to have a mental edge over his opponents, he must, among other things, be focused, have confidence, and concentration.
