Synthetic interferon beta-1b is the more commonly used drug in the United States. Synthetic interferon beta-1a has not yet been approved by the Food and Drug Administration It’s chemical make up is slightly different from the naturally occurring human beta interferon. The synthetic interferon beta-1b is made from genetically altered bacteria, usually some form of E-coli. Synthetic interferon beta-1b has only been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for “use in ambulatory patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis to reduce the frequency of clinical exacerbations.” (qtd in Lechtenberg, 1995, p.82).
