Failure of the American Dream
Being successful is the American dream in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby, which is what the majority of society desires. This dream, for one, can be achieved through countless hours of dedication. Success can also be achieved through roundabout, disloyal ways. In the eyes of the public, the way someone achieves success is unimportant, as long as they are successful. But in The Great Gatsby, it is important how success is achieved. If someone derives from a wealthy family, that someone lives in East Egg. If someone stumbles across a pile of “new” money, that someone lives in West Egg. The issues of dedication, dishonesty, and the origin of someone’s money, set up for the contrasting ways success is viewed in this novel. People can work their whole lives at something and never be successful. There are also those people with unbelievable amounts of dedication. This dedication is what propels them even further than the everyday hard-worker. Jay Gatsby was one of these people.
